The Miracle League Playground is Complete!

The playground at the Little Rock field is completed. Construction started in July 2011 and was completed in time for the fall season. Our playground features a toddler and belt swings, two roller coaster swings, a platform swing that a wheelchair can roll up on, an Omni spinner which is a super cool merry - go - round and a roller slide for a fun ride. The playground is a huge addition to the game day experience at the Miracle League complex. Players and their families are arriving early and staying late for their game for the added extra play time where the equipment and area work for them and not against.

A very special thanks to those that make this happen for our kids. The sponsors for this project are: Cliff and Kristen Lee, Riley's Warriors, Grace & Essa Alley, Toni & Ron Lazenby, Bale Honda, Janet & Sam Alley, Frank & Emily Smith, Gary Smith, VCC, Darek & Shelley Braunecker, Kyle Holmes, Kerry Ellison, Brad Davis, Greg Oaks, Cal Biggers, JC Halsell, Mitzi & Larry Choate, Louise & Roy Gutierrez, Bill McPherson, Pulaski Heights Masonic Lodge, Raouf & Tamara Kassissieh, Haitham Alley, David Parker, Phillip & Louis Cox, Samual Carter, Bancorp South, Matthew & Shannon Karpoff, Mary Ellen Vangilder, Philip Miron, Wade & Clair Alley, John Fogleman, Kim Brockington, JCS Construction, RP Power Little Rock City Parks and Recreation, Matthew & Patricia Jones, Redstone Construction, Rob Veon and crew, Team General Contracting, Southern Star Concrete, Granite Mountain Quarry, Fleming Electric, and Total Landscape Solutions.

Hogs attend opening day of Miracle League in NWA

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The University of Arkansas baseball team joined a group of volunteers Saturday in celebration of Opening Day for the Miracle League in Northwest Arkansas. Junior catcher James McCann and sophomore pitcher DJ Baxendale, both members of Arkansas’ Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, helped organize the Razorbacks’ participation.

“When we found out about this opportunity, we brought it to the team and they were excited,” McCann said. “This was a really good experience for us because we’ve all been so blessed and being part of the Miracle League was a great chance for us to give back to those who may need our help.”

In 2006, the Miracle League made its debut in the Natural State with an organization in Little Rock. Northwest Arkansas is the latest addition with Saturday’s opening day festivities. Ten teams took the field during the day with the Razorback baseball team and other volunteers serving as “buddies” for each player.

The Miracle League was founded in 1998 by the Rockdale Youth Baseball Association in Georgia. The mission of the organization is to provide opportunities for all children to play baseball regardless of their disability. The league began with 35 players on four teams. The Miracle League has since been established across the United States.

Presently, there are more than 200 Miracle League sites across the country, including Puerto Rico, with 100 completed rubberized fields and 100 more still under construction. The organization proudly serves over 80,000 children and young adults with disabilities.

The Razorbacks’ community service efforts for the 2010-11 academic season began last week with the start of Sweat Hawgs, the longest-running program in Razorback athletics, as gymnastics co-head coach Rene Cook, gymnasts Michelle Stout and Jamie Pisani and women’s basketball student-athletes Erin Gatling and Julie Inman made a visit to Butterfield Elementary School.

2011 Double Header - At a Glance

Second in the two event series on December 3rd has gone down in history for the Miracle League of Arkansas. It wasn't enough that we had pro baseball players in town from both the American and National Leagues, this year the game was stepped when Grant took the stage and sat in with the local dance band "Tragikly White". Grant has been a Miracle League player since our first season in fall of 2006. You know how it goes - you arrive at your ball games during the season and check out how everyone's week has gone. While sitting in the dugout in a conversation with Grant one Friday night we discovered he played the drums. One thing led to another which led to Grant bringing down the house at the annual fundraiser "Double Header". Pro players Cliff Lee, Dustin Moseley, Tommy Hunter, Scott Carroll, Dallas Keuchel, Drew Smyly, Lucas Harrell and Slade Heathcott listen in awe just as spectators of a great baseball game do when they take the field. Grant shared with everyone some amazing talent.

The evening didn't stop there. We also learned that Alex is quite the artist. Her medium is acrylic on canvas which might seem a little unlikely. Alex is an 11 year old girl with Cerebral Palsy who loves to go fast around the Miracle League bases in her toxic green wheelchair. She also loves to paint, dance, sing in the church choir and hang out with her friends.

Easter Seals Artistic Realization Technologies Program (A.R.T.) offers artists the opportunity to create original paintings. The process was developed by Tim Lefens, a New Jersey artist, so children and adults with disabilities could express their artistic abilities. Artists, such as Alex, work with a "tracker" via a laser or point system. The "trackers" are volunteers who become the hands and arms of the artist by taking directives from them to create the beautiful art.

These multi-talented players in our league proved once again why we say, Miracle League ... it's more than baseball!
